Katie Lewis Photography Blog bio picture

About Katie

I have always known I would be a photographer. I won a competition when I was 9 and that was it! Oh sure I thought about becoming a marine biologist or a teacher. Oh, and who could forget the 5 minutes in 7th grade science when I was sure I would become a genetic scientist? But really, I always knew I would be a photographer.

So to ensure that I knew what the heck I was doing I knew I had to be educated. I took every photography class I could in high school. I then went on to college at Minnesota State University-Moorhead and majored in photojournalism.  After I got my degree, I wanted even more education and I headed to a prominent photography school in Massachusetts called Hallmark Institute of Photography. Somehow I survived their intense 10-month program and am now back in my hometown of Fargo, ND. I opened up Katie Lewis Photography in 2006 and have been shooting weddings and portraits ever since!

This blog shows the most current work I have done and little tidbits about what I am up to. Please feel free to leave comments about any of the work. I LOVE comments so comment away!!

Alternative Bouquets

Last week I was reading status updates on Facebook and came across the sister of a bride whose wedding I photographed a while back. She was having problems figuring out what to do for her bouquet in her upcoming wedding because she is allergic to flowers. It got me thinking, what would you do if you were allergic to flowers, but still really wanted a bouquet? So I thought I would give a few cool ideas that I have found from reading a TON of wedding blogs everyday for those who have that same problem or maybe just want something different!

Simply Bloom Photography is an amazing studio located in Huntsville, Alabama and they recently did this awesome shoot. The bouquet is made out of door knobs from the store Anthropologie! Isn’t it awesome! So unique! I love how they carried it into the boutonniere as well.

Another great idea is from the wedding planning blog Wedding Chicks. This site is awesome if you want to find great ideas for your wedding day so definitely check it out. Here they used vintage brooches as flowers for these bouquets. Aren’t they cool? Photographs from this post are done by Amy Squires & Co. and Alice Hu Photography

These are just a few ideas that I thought were super cool. Do you have any ideas for amazing alternative bouquets? Leave a comment!!

Laura - When my cousin got married the flowers given to the people in the wedding were made out of wood. I thought it was a really neat idea because the flowers would last forever, I still have my corsage and it looks perfect. The wedding was in Fargo so I'm sure the flowers were from somewhere local but I'm not for certain where.March 2, 2010 - 9:14 pm

Christy Doyea - I had a bride a few years ago use this company. http://www.angelsaccents.com/ They were beautiful!March 2, 2010 - 9:45 pm

amanda l. - do you ever look at offbeatbride.com?? they have all sort of neat ideas for flowerless bouquets. love that site!!March 2, 2010 - 10:02 pm

Kelly: Business Portrait

A few days ago I met up with local realtor Kelly. Kelly is a realtor at Park Co. Realtors in Fargo. She needed some new business portraits and came by the office. Kelly is pretty new to the realty world but is doing extremely well! We had a great time chatting and laughing! The following pictures were taken in my office using only window light.

An Update & ‘Oldies’ But Goodies!

So just a quick update on my ‘addiction’. If you have no idea what I’m talking about you can check out my post about it HERE. Well I am proud to say that I am now on my 53rd day without any Coca-Cola, any other pop or caffeine! I still really crave it and when I see it around I really want to drink some. You know when you just get out of a relationship or you’ve been without one for a long while and it seems like every where you go there is sappy love songs and people who are really happy? Well it’s the same thing with Coke. Everywhere I go I see signs for it or people drinking it and they seem so happy about it. It’s annoying! But I have resisted!

So this week I thought I’d talk about some ‘older’ television shows that I love. I’d love to hear your opinions or suggestions for other shows that you love or just can’t live without, so leave a comment!

Project Runway- Lifetime

project-runway-season-7

I LOVE Project Runway! I was afraid that it would change in some way once it moved from Bravo to Lifetime but it is exactly the same. I am so amazed at the designers creativity. It’s so interesting to watch people who are creative in a completely different way then you and to see them dream up these designs and execute them just amazes me! Heidi Klum is fantastic and absolutely adorable. She seems to really care about the designers and models and that’s nice to see. And who doesn’t love Tim Gunn? When I’m having a hard time with something or things aren’t coming together the way I want them to I just hear Tim say ‘Make It Work’ and it helps me push through!

Keeping Up With The Kardashians- E!

kardashians-new-season-keeping-up-with-the-kardashians-2306705-377-400

I’ll probably get a lot of flack for this one but I love this show and this family. They are so entertaining! My favorite sister is easily Khloe. She’s sassy and says whats on her mind and is hilarious. They always have something crazy going on and it definitely keeps me watching! Now if Kourtney can just get rid of her horrific boyfriend Scott things would be so much better! It seems like Kim and Khloe have good relationships so I don’t understand how she can think her relationship is a good one in comparison. Obviously I’m very tight with these people and know what their relationship is really like ;) Anyway, check it out for all the great craziness!

Celebrity Rehab - VH1

dr_drew

Honestly I think Celebrity Rehab is amazing. I used to watch Dr. Drew when he was on Loveline back in the ’90s (anyone else think he’s kind of hot, in an older man kind of way? No? Yes?) Anyway, I feel like they should view this show to high school students when they are talking about drugs. I feel like if teens had to watch not only these people detox but also what drugs can do to a long-time user, it would scare a good chunk of them straight! It freaks me out! I find it so interesting to hear about how people’s childhoods or lifestyle choices have lead them to drugs and where they are today and to see them work through all those issues can be intense. This season they have Dennis Rodman, Heidi Fleiss (ex-Hollywood madam to the stars - drugs and life have definitely taken their toll on her!), Joey Kover (from Real World Hollywood), Kari Ann Peniche (Miss Teen USA who was previously on Sex Rehab), Lisa D’Amato (from America’s Next Top Model), Mackenzie Phillips, Mike Starr (from Alice in Chains), Mindy McCready (country singer- in one episode she has a seizure and it’s probably one of the scariest moments I’ve ever seen on this show!), and Tom Sizemore (actor, Saving Private Ryan, etc). It really is fascinating so check it out!

Ty - Wow Katie, all that you watch is reality TV. We like to watch real TV like Survivor.February 23, 2010 - 8:32 am

Alie - I DVR ALL of those shows!!!February 27, 2010 - 12:33 am
